Around Lake Guntersville with Davy Hite

When Davy Hite isn’t competing on Day 4, he always does his popular First Look videos with the pros when they come off the water. He’ll be doing that today, too, but before he started that, he went out on the water to see how the Top 12 were doing.

First, we found Dean Rojas, in sight of the Guntersville Dam.

He only had one fish at the time and was in 12th place, according to BASSTrakk.

Rojas is known for sight fishing and had done some of that earlier in the week.

“I talked to Dean last night, and he told me he didn’t think he had any sight fish left,” said Hite.

“But if he sees a fish, he’ll pitch to it.”

Rojas had spectators …

… even of the canine persuasion.

The troopers watched Rojas right next to the other spectators.

Next, we pulled up on Greg Vinson.

Vinson was in fourth place at the time on BASSTrakk and had about 14 pounds.

He was as calm and laid back as you could imagine.

This spot allowed Vinson to get fish as they were coming in and out of the spawn.

Vinson and Hite talked to fans on a live streaming Periscope video.

“This place didn’t really get hot until yesterday,” said Vinson.

“We got that north wind, so it created a lot of current coming out of this creek and rolling across this little knob here,” said Vinson.

Every now and then his bait runs into eelgrass.

Vinson said the bass keep biting his Megabass Shiner. “They know they’re not supposed to eat it, but they just can’t resist it,” he said.

Vinson moves down the stretch a little.

He moves back up and catches one …

… but it’s tiny.

We tried to zoom in on it, but Hite laughed. “I don’t think you have a lens long enough to make that one look big,” he said. Vinson tossed it back.

The birds were flying …

… all over this spot.

Vinson went back to casting.

“The worst I can do here is 12th place,” said Vinson. “If I’m going to win it, I need to stay here because I think this place has the fish to do it.”

Vinson was drawing a crowd.

“We’re supposed to get a little bit of wind, and that’s what I need,” said Vinson. “The fish need an excuse to feed.”

We left Vinson and moved on to Jason Christie.

He was fishing underneath and around a bridge.

“It’s incredible how many fish transition through these bridges,” said Hite. “This just a funnel for this creek, and the fish pass through here.”

Christie was throwing multiple lures, including swimbaits and jerkbaits, looking for the big fish that were transitioning.

“I’m throwing everything,” said Christie. “When I get tired of throwing something, I pick up something else.”

This is the first day Christie has spent any time in this spot.

He stopped by a few times, but he didn’t commit to it until today after he got a good bite here.

Time for a change.

“This place is the best chance for me to win,” said Christie.

“I need about 30 pounds to win, and I just think this is my best shot.”

“I may not win, but if I want to get any sleep tonight, I have to know I gave it my best, and I think this is it.”

We moved from Christie on to Mike Iaconelli, who was just setting up in this spot in Browns Creek after a short move.

“He’s been fishing a creek up the lake and has just moved,” said Hite. “He’s fishing shallow milfoil right on the tip of a hump.”

“Mike has been in a different creek for 3 days, and here he is in a completely different area,” said Hite. “It’s a tough decision to abandon a place like that, but he’s trying to win a tournament and that’s what he’s got to do.”

Senkos are very popular here on Guntersville, said Hite, wacky rigged and Texas rigged.

Blade baits and swimbaits have been popular this week among the top pros as well.
