KVD has won the past three AOY titles and is looking for his seventh overall.
KVD threatened to make up some ground on Jones with a big Day Two, which put him in second place in the Pride of Georgia.
Edwin Evers got some bonus points for leading the first two days of the event.
Evers slipped on Day Three with 9 pounds and fell to third.
Evers finished second in the event and climbed to fifth in the AOY points race.
Jones began Day Four in ninth place and KVD looked like he would make up some ground as he started in second.
VanDam set out hoping to have another magical day.
He fished a laydown early on Day Four.
KVD’s bite disappeared somewhat, as he was left measuring fish.
Through all his running on Sunday, KVD did manage a couple smiles.
His afternoon big bites never came into fruition.
KVD said he was focused on winning the event and said he might have fished differently.
Jones caught 12-12 to climb into sixth place while KVD’s 7-4 dropped him to seventh.
Jones now stands 107 points ahead of second-place Terry Scroggins, and VanDam trails him by 118.
