Thieves cause $5,000 in damage and losses to Kurt Dove’s truck

SAN ANTONIO, Texas — Kurt Dove’s truck was stolen from a hotel parking lot in San Antonio on Wednesday, resulting in estimated losses of $5,000.

“My wife and I had driven both our trucks, a Tundra and an F-250, to San Antonio, where we were both flying out from the airport. I was headed out to California to do some fishing on the Delta, and she was going on a business trip.

“We stayed overnight, and I made sure we parked under the brightest light in the parking lot.

“We got up the next morning, and when I finished up my BassEdge radio show, the podcast that I do, around 9 a.m., I got a call from the San Antonio Police Department.

“’We’ve got your truck over here,’ they said, and I didn’t even know it was gone!”

Ford F-250s are the most stolen truck in San Antonio. Thieves steal them and tend to dump them in the same spots. His truck was in one of those ditch sites when someone called it in.

Dove had just replaced the tires on the Ford, too, when he and his wife, Rhonda, were in Orange, Texas, for the most recent Bassmaster Elite Series event.

“We had just put $2,000 into it!”

The Doves recovered their truck from the police station, drove it to the airport and parked it. Rhonda got back in the next day and took the truck home and is dealing with the insurance claim today.

“They stole the Leer cover I had on it and caused some damage when they ripped it off,” said Kurt. “They also damaged the ignition, of course.”

The police estimated the value of the cover at $2,500, and the Yeti Cooler the thieves stole was worth about $400.

Because the truck was not packed for a tournament, it was not loaded down with the fishing stuff he usually carries with him, and what he did have was in the Tundra.

“I’ll be home next week and we’ll have a few days before heading to Guntersville, so hopefully by the time we get back from there, we’ll have all of the insurance stuff taken care of,” said Kurt.

“They were able to recover it, you know. It could have been worse. It’s just a little hiccup.

“The problem is you just feel so eerie when you get in your truck and you know someone else has been in there. You feel violated. You think, how can somebody take something that’s not theirs?

“But instead of trying to understand it, we’re trying to just take it step by step and let the insurance handle it. We’re trying to just move on and hope it never happens again.”
