Southeastern Oklahoma University rallies on Day 2

Post-frontal conditions couldn’t stop Dwight Camp and Jonathan Furlong of Southeastern Oklahoma University, who rallied on Day 2 to take the lead of the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series Central Regional.

Post-frontal conditions couldn’t stop Dwight Camp and Jonathan Furlong of Southeastern Oklahoma University who rallied on Day 2 to bring in the Bass Pro Nitro Big Bag weighing 17-8 and take the lead of the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series Central Regional on the Red River with a two-day total of 19-12.

Camp and Furlong managed only one fish on the shortened Day 1, and credited their Day 2 comeback to a full day of fishing on Pool 4.

“We didn’t get on anything yesterday until about 12 and the lock closed at 1:20,” said Camp. “I lost one about 4-pounds yesterday and then 5 minutes later we caught one, then it was time to head to the lock.”

Only having a few bites during practice, Camp and Furlong milked their primary area, which has gotten better with time.

“The fish are moving up and starting to think about spawning,” said Furlong. “They weren’t really there before the front. But they’re moving up now.”

The cold front that moved through on Day 1 and caused a 3-hour delay had many anglers scrambling to adjust on Day 2. Day 1 leaders Brandon Koon and Kyle Winstead of UT Martin felt the brunt of the blow, zeroing on Day 2 but only falling to 8th place.

Staying fairly consistent is the team of Sawyer Grace and Mike Webster of Arkansas Tech University, who brought in 3 fish for 7-2 on Day 2 to move from fourth to second with a two-day total of 16-4. Tyler Craig and Blake Alford of La Monroe fell from second to third with 16-1 for two days.

Hunter Leppert and Cole Eubanks of Arkansas Monticello took over the Carhartt Big Bass race with a 6-10 stud. The big bass was part of their 3-fish bag that went 13-3 showing they are certainly on the right quality.

The Top 20 after Day 2 move on to the final round, which starts Saturday at 6:30 AM as the anglers head out from Grand Ecore landing. The final round weigh-in will begin at 3:30 PM on the campus of Northwestern State University, where the Top 14 teams will qualify for the 2015 Carhartt Bassmaster College Series National Championship to be held later this summer.
