B.A.S.S. keeps an eye on the National Ocean Council

B.A.S.S. remains vigilant as to just how far the reach of the spatial planning might go.

B.A.S.S. Conservation, in concert with many in the recreational fishing community, continues to voice concerns regarding just how Coastal and Marine Spatial Planning will be implemented through the Strategic Action Plans for Coastal and Marine Spatial Planning. Given that the Ocean Policy Task Force continues to define coastal and marine to include the Nation’s ocean, coastal and Great Lakes resources, B.A.S.S. remains vigilant as to just how far the reach of the spatial planning might go.

In an October 11, 2011, letter to Dr. Jane Lubchenco, Under Secretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere, and NOAA Administrator; and Ms. Eileen Sobeck, Department of the Interior Deputy Assistant Secretary for Fish and Wildlife and Parks, B.A.S.S. joined with 7 other key organizations in expressing our concerns for the lack of recognition of the importance of recreational fishing to conservation efforts, and the need to establish recreational fishing as a national priority.
