Keep an open mind
This week I’m going to talk about something that’s been bugging me for a while. It’s the fact that some anglers refuse to open their minds to new lures and to new approaches in smallmouth fishing.
You have to tease 'em
Winter smallmouth aren't dormant, they're just lethargic. Tease 'em to tempt 'em.

What makes for a trophy smallmouth bass? I’ve thought a lot about that over the years. I don’t think you can answer that question unless you know where the fish was caught.
The last of the topwater bite
A lot of you might think I’m crazy for saying this but if the water isn’t iced-over on your lake I’d suggest you give topwater a shot. You’d be surprised at how many fish you can catch this time of the year with a frog.
Old fish or new fish?
Smallmouth have a strong tendency to school or group by size. If you start seeing fish that are smaller or larger than the ones you’ve been catching, it’s likely that you’re into new fish.
Follow the bait, follow the bass
If you can anticipate the movement of forage on your favorite smallmouth water, you'll be waiting on the bass.
