Logan Martin is famed for its Coosa River spotted bass but the largemouth made the biggest splash. The tournament day started out a little chilly with temps in the low 40s but by early afternoon the temperature climbed into the upper 60s and low 70s. The water temps made it to the upper 50s making everyone hopeful that the spawn was just around the corner. Spring had definitely sprung making for an enjoyable day on the lake. The fisherman showed out and the crowd showed up for a great weigh in.
The largemouth cooperated for most anglers, as the majority of the anglers brought in limits of five fish. The largest bag was over 20 pounds but surprisingly did not contain a single largemouth or the largest bass of the tournament. However, the largest bass of the tourney was over 7 pounds but was outside of the top 10. The anglers really showed out as it took almost 16 pounds of bass to get inside the top 10 with only 10 teams failing to weigh in a limit of five fish.
The majority of anglers caught there limits shallow around structure on baits such as jigs and spinnerbaits worked slowly on prespawn patterns. A few anglers reported catches of spots on spawning points but the majority of the limits were largemouth.
The fishing is definitely heating up; we should see even heavier limits in the next tournament on the Coosa River.
