Good omen or bad for Aaron?

Halfway through Day 1, Aaron Martens has already culled more keepers than weighed-in over two days on the Sabine River in 2013. That's a good thing, right?

Martens would surely answer in the affirmative. But if he were going to duplicate his Toyota Angler of the Year title run in 2013, he would need to rise from the ashes after the Sabine River tournament.

Martens finished 85th here in '13, after weighing only two fish totaling 3-11 – one keeper each day. No one saw an AOY title emerging from that wreck. The mantra has always been that you can't afford one bad tournament if you're going to make a run at AOY, and 85th place is a step or two beyond bad.

It's a testament to the remarkable run that Martens made to win the second AOY title of his career.
