It was surprising to see a Kentucky Lake veteran like Mark Menendez near the bottom of the Day 1 BASSfest standings. The Paducah, Ky., resident was an angler many picked to contend here. It appears Menendez has solved the puzzle in the last hour. He had one 2-pounder in the boat at noon. Since 12:45, Menendez has caught 7 fish, including a 6-pounder at 1:30, that have allowed him to cull up to 22-2. Couldn't happen to a better guy.
