Beating a dead horse: Talkin’ about practice

Bill Lowen and Bobby Lane were the first two guys I talked to at the anglers’ meeting yesterday. Both were there early, working on tackle in their boats in the parking lot. And both were, uh, less than encouraged about their prospects at Sturgeon Bay after three days of practice.

“It sucks,” said Lowen in succinctly summing up the situation. He was talking about the fishing conditions, not the fishery, which is widely recognized as a top smallmouth destination. Lane said much the same.

So the irony isn’t lost on me that BASSTrakk currently shows those two anglers tied for second place with 18 pounds each today.

And, to be clear, I’m not accusing either angler of “sand-bagging.” I’ve known both too long to even consider that. I’m simply beating the dead horse about practice: The past doesn’t dictate the future, even when the past was as recent as yesterday, especially in a bass tournament.
