Howell encouraged early

Randy Howell is encouraged by what he's seen so far on the west shore of Lake George, especially by the 10-pounder that he found a few minutes ago. The other good sign is his  lack of company here. Several anglers drifted south into an area Howell had pretty much to himself on Thursday. There are only three other boats in this vast spawning flat today, and they are several hundred yards to the north.

Howell set up on the big bass for a minute, but she moved. So he's taking advantage of the open water, doing some looking. Howell noted that the water level has dropped a few inches today, and the wind direction is partly due to that. It's been generally from the north this week, but is blowing from the south today.

That first fish he put in the boat earlier was a 2-pounder.
