Decisions, decisions

Undoubtedly, the brain wheels were spinning in the fog this morning for the 113 Elite Series anglers at the Orange, Texas, takeoff ramp.

The two-hour fog delay yesterday was even longer today. The vastness of this fishery is the anglers' main concern now. Dennis Tietje said he boated 180 miles Thursday – basically 90 miles east, then 90 miles back to Orange. Mike McClellan made his now-patented run west to Houston to catch his 8th place total of 11 pounds, 7 ounces. Skeet Reese, 7th with 12-0, knows his Day 1 area got pounded. The other two spots he found in practice are 60 and 80 miles away, he said.

Those guys and many more are probably running alternative scenarios through their minds, wondering what's the smartest use of their limited time today. It will be interesting to see who made good choices and who made bad ones at the end of the day.

There's a lot of pressure on them to make a good one. A bad finish at the Sabine River will put a serious damper on any Angler of the Year plans, unless you are a miracle worker, like Aaron Martens was in 2013 when he finished 85th here.
