What is a slacktide?

I have the good fortune today of having Pete Gluszek as the boat driver for myself and photographer James Overstreet. Pete is a two time Bassmaster Opens winner and a native of this area. It's fair to say he's so excited today he can hardly contain himself.

"I can't wait to see how the pros fish this river," he said. Pete explained to me that we started the day in a "slacktide" situation — which means the river is essentially in the pause mode. The tide is neither coming in or going out. Pete says the slacktide usually lasts about 45 minutes. During this time the fishing is tougher. But when the tide starts coming in again that's when the bite will turn on. "It's a lot like on a dammed up river when the current starts flowing again."
