It looks like All-Star Week under the bridge

11:32 am EDT, May 4, 2013

I can't get any work done for all the visitors under the Highway 109 bridge. Following Kevin VanDam was Skeet Reese. It looks like Elite Series All-Star Week here.

Skeet worked the opposite side of the bridge pier that VanDam fished. He was throwing a shaky head worm. I was so intent on getting an iPhone photo of him possibly catching a fish that I didn't ask him about what he'd caught so far. Besides, that's what BASSTrakk is for.

Being under the bridge for a few minutes did allow Reese to pull back the hood of his rain suit. But he was soon back in the pouring rain, hood up and dripping.

So much rain

11:27 am EDT, May 4, 2013

Hardly any locals on the water today, owing to the unusually rainy weather. And very few spectator boats, with the exception of this guy, who has been very respectful and kept his distance.

Casey Ashley has started culling

Latest from Troll Central

11:10 am EDT, May 4, 2013

If somebody could deliver me a six-pack of Bud Light, I'd be happier than a hog in slop.

My buddy James Overstreet, who has never had a problem leaving me somewhere, moved just up the lake to follow Aaron Martens. JO reports that Martens is culling and just culled up to about 6 1/2 pounds, right after he missed a good one.

"I hope the largemouth aren't biting today," Martens said. "I probably should be fishing for them."

After weighing-in five largemouths Thursday, Martens only had one in his bag Friday. All five bass were 2-plus-pounders, including his biggest fish, about a 2 3/4-pound spot.

Blogging like a troll

11:04 am EDT, May 4, 2013

I've finally figured out a dry place to do a bit of blogging. I'm sitting like a troll under the Highway 109 bridge - high and dry for the first time today.

So who should happen by as soon as I got my mobile troll office set up? Kevin VanDam. I scared the crap out of him when I yelled, "Hey," from my homeless person's abode.

KVD said he had three fish, worked the bridge piers with a spinnerbait and a jerkbait, then moved on. He got a chuckle when I held up a cardboard box that once housed a Bass Pro Shops gas lantern.

For white trash like me, this feels like home.

Another one for Ponds

Back to square one

10:54 am EDT, May 4, 2013

We return again to the creek where we started. Reese has left the building, Zaldain is still here and Scott Ashmore is the new kid on the block. He has two in the box. The many pros that were in here yesterday have yet to show up. Maybe they've adjusted to the change in the weather and have found more productive patterns and places.

Short is culling

10:42 am EDT, May 4, 2013

Kevin Short just traded up. Culling a 1 pounder and adding a pound and a half fish.

Rain delay over

10:38 am EDT, May 4, 2013

Our rain delay is over, for the time being. The rain has let up but it is still steady. Satellite radar shows some heavy stuff coming our way.

We find Matt Reed fishing the riprap causeway of the bridge where Shryock was fishing earlier. He catches a small keeper. He has a small limit.

Keith Combs just pulled up to the bridge and starts casting to the riprap. He's along the other side of the causeway. He's twitching a jerkbait. He has three in the box.

Coloring the bait

10:33 am EDT, May 4, 2013

Kevin Short just used a yellow highlighter to add more color to the end of Zoom shaky head worms.

"I don't know if it really helps, but it makes me think it might help," he said with a smile.
