Decisions, decisions for Zaldain

2:13 pm CDT, Jun 22, 2013
Chris Zaldain is having a good day. Not quite as good as BASSTrakk credited him with earlier. But this is one of two 4-pound smallmouth he's got in his livewell. He landed this one about 11 a.m. today and it was his fourth fish in the well.

Zaldain is having a good year. He came to La Crosse ranked 13th in AOY points. But he's not having a particularly good tournament. He qualified for the Top 50 cut  by ounces - in 44th place.

So when he caught his fifth fish in Minnesota at 12:30, he had a decision to make. It was a barely keeper-size smallmouth. So it was dump his fifth fish and keep fishing in Minnesota, or leave and - well, you know the options by now, I think.

Zaldain's brain was churning, obviously.

"I haven't been bit in awhile, so I'm not sure," he said. "I'm not trying to make the Top 12 cut, I'm thinking about points. I don't want to come in with four fish."

Zaldain put the fifth fish in the livewell and left Minnesota waters - maybe to return, maybe not.

Skeet Reese unofficially at five fish for 9 pounds. Skeet has been fishing in an area with no service all day, and BassTrakk has been unable to update his weight.

Brian Beebe: boating phenom

1:10 pm CDT, Jun 22, 2013

I'm a little late in posting this but wanted to give proper recognition to my Day 1 camera boat driver Brian Beebe of Rice Lake, Wisc. He was also a camera boat driver for us at the 2012 Elite Tournament here in La Crosse.

Beebe (no one seems to use his first name) got involved with us because of Darren Jacobson, who he called his mentor. Darren is the northern account manager for Strike King, and in his spare time he takes terrific tournament photos for Bassmaster.com.

Beebe works for Darren as a regional Strike King pro staff guy, helping sell products at trade shows and other places. He's also a service technician at an RV dealership. Oh and by the way he also runs, along with two other guys, a 24 tournament team trail-- The Upper Midwest Bass Challenge Series. He said it is well on its way to becoming the biggest circuit in the state. This is a busy guy. Brian Beebe thanks for your service to BASS and the sport. It was a pleasure to ride with you!
