Faircloth tossing back keepers

11:30 am CDT, Jun 22, 2013

We finally spotted Todd Faircloth fishing an island on the other side of a wide shallow flat. He busted out of there before we could idle close to him.

We chased him around a bend where he ducked in between two small islands. He's fishing a patch of shallow grass with a frog. He just caught one that looked to be a keeper. He tossed it back.

Faircloth just boated another keeper. This one also goes back into the drink.

My smartphone drowned yesterday due to the nasty weather. Meisner saved my bacon by lending his phone to me. The battery is nearly exhausted. I'll keep blogging until the phone runs out of juice.

Wacky race ending at weigh-in

There was a big clamor at the nearly empty weigh-in site early this morning as a large group of folks in oragne shirts went running down Clinton Avenue away from Veteran's Freedom Park.

They were competitors in the Coulee Region Race, an urban adventure trek that had two-person teams run about town completing crazy tasks at the venue of sponsors who were raising money for the local Boys and Girls Club.

Teams had to do things like hit a gas station, don coveralls and get somebody to let them pump their gas. Another was a stop at the bus station to garner at least three donations. At a motorcycle shop, the teams had to navigate a child's scooter around a now mud track.

The race finishes at the weigh-in site, near the Shimano booth, where the final challenge is a casting competition. The contestants should begin to come in soon, and the three winning team's of the $1,000 prizes in men's, women's and co-ed divisions will take to the B.A.S.S. stage to receive those checks.

Miyazaki's love-hate relationship with frogs

11:03 am CDT, Jun 22, 2013

Just had a nice chat with Yusuke Miyazaki, one of the talented young pros from Japan. He's had a good morning in the lower end of Pool 8. "I have a decent sack, but I need a couple of big ones," he said. "It was miserable weather early this morning, but they were biting!" he added. His 13-pound early flurry has him in sixth place with 39-2. He fished a swim jig around the tip of a riprap wall, then switched to a floating frog as he began working his way along the grass-lined rocks. Just now, a fish sucked his frog under. Miyazaki paused to let the bass take it firmly in its mouth, and then reared back with all his might, pirhouetting as the hook set failed to connect.

"I like frog fishing, but I hate frog fishing, too," he mused, echoing every angler's frustrating, love-hate relationship with hollow body frog baits.

The sky is brightening

10:50 am CDT, Jun 22, 2013

We're in the middle of the Mississippi trying to figure out where Todd Faircloth is fishing. BASSTrakk tells us he's nearby but we can't see him.

We find Kevin Hawk instead, hanging  a pair of bass on a balance beam. Dean Rojas is fishing nearby.

The sky is brightening. The air is warming.

Jordon's waitin' on the sun

10:34 am CDT, Jun 22, 2013

Kelly Jordon wishes the sun would come out from behind the clouds and make his fish bite better. He also wishes the fish that do bite would hang on a little longer. He missed a 4-pounder a minute ago, and another good fish just now. "I also had two UFOs blow up on my bait. They might have been pike; I don't know," he said. "I keep checking my hooks, and they're sharp."

He may be a little distracted, watching Brandon Card catch bass after bass just a few yards away and on the opposite side of the rock fence. "Brandon must have caught 100 fish today," he said. I assume he's exaggerating. Jordon, Card and Pace each caught at least 13 pounds from this small area yesterday. Only Jordon remains in the hole now. He's plowing through the milfoil, hopping a white frog and getting frequent swirls and blow-ups, but nothing he can weigh.

If anything, Aaron Martens is patient.

If anything, Aaron Martens is patient.

He's worked this same very small area since the launch earlier this morning. He has about 14 1/2 pounds in the boat, and is intent on getting rid of his smallest fish -- a two-pounder he landed right after he arrived.

He also indicated that me may make a move soon, so we'll be watching closely and will give chase when he decides to get up and out of here.
