Reed getting frustrated

9:47 am CDT, Mar 21, 2013

Matt Reed has had a frustrating day so far. He has two small bass in the livewell, but he's had eight bites.

"I've caught two, lost two and missed four," Reed said. "I can't make 'em hold it."

Reed attributes those short strikes to the cloudy weather. He's hoping that he doesn't have to weigh-in either of the fish he's got now, one in particular."

"I've got one in there that barely touches," Reed said, referring to the 14-inch minimum length limit.

Falcon warming up

9:18 am CDT, Mar 21, 2013

Looks like your typical fishing tournament. All the guys were complaining at registration last night saying that they weren't going to catch them. And right now my phone is being lit up by all the anglers' Marshals with pictures of 5- to 8-pound fish. Falcon may not be what it was, but its certainly no Sabine.

What will be interesting to see is if these early fish on Day One are coming off beds. Several guys did say they had a few spawners found, but that for the most part it's going to be a postspawn deal.

Waiting for the sun

9:16 am CDT, Mar 21, 2013

Hank Cherry has a 5-pounder in the boat already, but he's, in his words, "Killing time until the sun comes out and I go to the trees."

Cherry had five bites on the first day of practice, two of which he landed — a 10 1/2-pounder and a 7.

"Those three others ran off into the trees," Cherry said. "I don't know what they were — bass, catfish, alligator gar — but it was something."

It's currently  overcast and cool on Falcon, but it's supposed to clear and warm up as the day progresses.

Fast and furious

8:54 am CDT, Mar 21, 2013

Well, that sure didn't take long. Want to know the kind of fish Falcon Lake can offer? How about Jeremy Starks, with what can be an 8-pounder in the boat? And looks like Jason Christie has a mule already, too. And those catches, B.A.S.S. fans, almost certainly happened in their first 30 minutes of fishing. Hang on friends! Things are sure to continue heating up for the "hog hunters" down here on the Texas/Mexico border.
