Just not KVD's day so far

1:30 pm CST, Feb 23, 2013

At the bump station on Day One, Kevin VanDam wasn’t totally pleased with his day.

“I lost a big one,” he reported. “I was hoping to do a little better, maybe tomorrow.”

This after leading the BASSTrakk standings then weighing in 19-12 to stand in fourth. That’s not good?

“No, no, no,” the four-time Classic champ said. “I know you’ll have to catch them better than that.”

Well, he was dead on, as usual, but his "maybe tomorrow" hasn’t happened yet. KVD hasn't boated a limit. He's stuck on four fish for 8-9, dropping him to seventh on BASSTrakk. He’s 8-0 behind Cliff Pace’s pace, and filling his limit might cut that to around a 5 or 6-pound deficit.

If he comes in with a big finish in the final hour or so, he could be within striking distance of the lead – what angler would want KVD breathing down their neck on the final day of the Classic?

Hank Cherry moves

1:22 pm CST, Feb 23, 2013

Hank Cherry just moved further into Honey Creek to fish another cove. As we pulled in, there were two boats and a total of six anglers fishing, all throwing jerkbaits. That's got to be disheartening. However, he plodded past and settled in on a row of docks and started casting. The wind is moving through this cut nicely, which has been the ticket lately. There's lots of pea gravel banks in here, which have been his best producers.

Palaniuk leapfrogs Ike into second

1:20 pm CST, Feb 23, 2013

This 4-pounder pushed Brandon Palaniuk into second on the BASSTrakk standings.

You snooze, you lose. It’s worse if something breaks.

Michael Iaconelli’s time out to deal with a broken trolling motor and switching boats might be opening the door. Ike said he had the same midday lull on Day One, then things picked back up in the afternoon. He might have missed a bit of it and that’s opened the door for the likes of current BASSTrakk leader Cliff Pace and Brandon Palaniuk, who just climbed into second place over Ike.

Brandon landed a four-pounder to boat 17-15 on the day and a total of 34-9. Pace is just 1-12 ahead at 36-5.

Trey Reid informs us that Palaniuk was pretty juiced with 4-pounder, fist-pumping and showing off the catch.

Things are moving.

Hank Cherry's day

1:12 pm CST, Feb 23, 2013

We picked up Hank Cherry, who's been having a subpar day, until now. He just boated two keepers in short order on a Megabass jerkbait and has upped his total to 9 1/2 pounds. He's furiously working the jerkbait and a small white grub in a pocket in Honey Creek. The wind has picked up which has obviously turned the fish on a bit. He just swung and missed and grimaced as it unfolded.

Palaniuk catches a good one

Brandon Palaniuk just landed one that will go close to 4 pounds, which allowed him to cull a smaller keeper.

Palaniuk is fishing shallow

12:59 pm CST, Feb 23, 2013
| By Trey Reid

We threaded our way through several islands in Horse Creek and stumbled into Palaniuk. We're halfway between two islands, and our boat's on 15 feet of water, so Palianuk, who's about 30 feet off the bank of an island, has to be fishing shallow. The bank has a gradual slope with smaller rock -- not really gravel, but not chunk rock either. Although I don't see any wood in the water, trees line the bank, so it's a safe bet there are a few pieces of wood in the water.

Picking up the Pace to take lead

12:58 pm CST, Feb 23, 2013

It happened again. As soon as I hit publish, Cliff Pace lands a 4-1/2 fish and another 2-pounder to climb over Ike into the lead of this here derby.

Pace had been stuck on three fish and 9 pounds, then bam, he's atop the BASSTrakk standings after catching what must be a donkey. Pace is listed with 36-5, 14-13 coming today.

Ike is 1-13 back and dealing with switching boats after his trolling motor went kaput. Ike reportedly dog-cursed a dog barking from the shore, so he's upset.

The afternoon bite must be on, and Ike could be missing some of it.

Small Window

12:52 pm CST, Feb 23, 2013

This is the point in the day when “the lull” quickly becomes “check-in time.” The first flight is due back in just under 2-hours. That’s not a lot time, so anglers don’t have the luxury of slowly waking up as the water and bite heat up.  Pretty much across the board, anglers (and Terry Butcher on the Lowrance War Room) have said the bite picks up late.

There are a lot of anglers out there right now that hope that’s true. There are a lot of limits that need filling (Cliff Pace) and upgrading (Kevin VanDam). It also makes this a terrible time for Ike’s trolling motor to fail.

As Pete Robbins blogged below, Iaconelli had trolling motor issues and was changing boats. According to Overstreet (who is on the scene), Ike has moved all of his gear and fish into the boat of Elite Angler Kevin Ledoux. Ledoux, of Choctaw, Okla., was working as a camera boat driver for ESPN cameraman Wes Miller.

We’ll have more on this changeover soon, including a photo gallery that documents the event.

Palaniuk making big move

12:47 pm CST, Feb 23, 2013

In golf, Saturday is moving day. Same deal here.

Going by BASSTrakk, the big mover on the day is Brandon Palaniuk. He’s approaching 16 pounds, and with his 116-10 from Day Two, is right on Ike’s tail with 32-3.

Ike is at 34-8 with 13 pounds in the boat today, but Pete Robbins just told us he’s lost power in his trolling motor and he’s switching boats.

Also moving up into the hunt today is Bobby Lane, older brother to 2012 Classic champ Chris. Bobby has 13 today and 30-7 total, climbing from 16th to fifth. Oh, by the way, Chris will really be lamenting his Day One zero after boating almost 20 pounds today. It most likely won't be near enough to make the cut though.

Moving the other way, so far, is first-day co-leader Cliff Pace. He’s only got 9 pounds for a 30-8 total, but he’s still to fill his limit. He's stuck at three fish

With two hours before the first flight reports, here are the current BASSTrakk standings.

Cold but not as windy

12:46 pm CST, Feb 23, 2013
| By Trey Reid

We're still trying to find Palaniuk. We think he's in Horse Creek, but it's a big piece of water. Meanwhile, let's reset the scene real quick. It's been another cold one out here, but it's a very different day because there's a lot less wind, and that really seems to be affecting the bite. Our boat's electronics are showing 42-degree water, although I'm sure you could find some a few degrees warmer.
