Evers and Howell

8:39 am CDT, May 9, 2013

We turned around and moved about a quarter mile down the same canal and found Edwin Evers and Randy Howell fishing opposite sides of the canal. Evers just boated what looked to be a 2 1/2 half to 3-pounder. Into the live well it goes. Howell says he has a limit, with the biggest being a 3-pounder, but he doesn't have much size after that. Howell just had a nice fish that he's working hard to get in the boat. And he does. Looks to be another 3-pounder. "Good job man," Evers calls from across the water.

Water levels and Lowen has company

8:34 am CDT, May 9, 2013

The water levels on this entire river system are extremely high -- about 10 feet higher than usual, by most estimates. That's creating a lot of current which most anglers said they were looking for in this tournament. The lower limbs of trees along the riverbanks are dangling in the water and the Elites along the ride here were fishing those areas hard. Our boat driver said the high water makes the bank ledges fish from 8 to 18 feet deep. The weather is warming quickly and is expected to be in the low 80s by noon.

Koto Kirayama has joined Lowen in this canal near the Bouldin Dam. He's fishing about 250 yards away from Lowen, but is basically fishing the same area. No word on what he has, but we're going to sidle up and inquire, if we can. Looks like he has a heavy jig that he's working slowly and just letting it go with the current.

Lowen lost two giants

8:01 am CDT, May 9, 2013

I'm with photographer Darren Jacobson and boat driver Mike Noble of Wetumpka, Ala. We ran 30 minutes or so up the Alabama River and have reached the Walter Bouldin Dam.

On our way, we passed about two dozen anglers and saw fish catches from Keith Combs, Jonathon VanDam and Casey Scanlon.

We've found Bill Lowen now just off the dam; he's fishing the shoreline. He reports he's already caught four and lost "two giants."

"I can't believe I'm the only one fishing up here," Lowen added. With his limit almost reached by 8 a.m., it's easy to see why he feels that way.
