All quiet on the canal

9:44 am CDT, May 11, 2013

We've been struggling with digital connectivity in a small corner of the Bouldin Dam Canal. Not sure what has been seen the past hour, but here are a few details. Nothing is happening in this canal. Edwin Evers, current Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year points leader and the man sitting in third place in this tournament, hasn't boated a fish in more than an hour. He's working both sides of the canal patiently, though. Chris Zaldain is closer to the dam, but we've yet to catch up with him to inquire of his catch. Casey Scanlon was here for a while, did little, then left. Chad Pipkens fished up the canal from us for a while, then made a 180 and headed out. We're waiting on Evers to upgrade and then we'll make a move to take a look at what some others are doing.

Crochet adds a 4-pounder

This fish is Crochet's fourth of the day. It was a nice 4-pound largemouth that crushed his frog.

The amazing KVD

9:28 am CDT, May 11, 2013
| By Ken Duke

He came into today's competition in 30th place. That doesn't sound that impressive, especially for the greatest bass angler of all-time, but it sets another Elite Series record. Kevin VanDam has now made the first cut (top 50) in 25 consecutive tournaments.

After Day 1, it didn't look like it was going to be easy. KVD was in 53rd place. But a solid charge on Day 2 moved him up 23 places and safely inside the first cut.

VanDam hasn't missed a first cut in more than three full years — since May of 2010 on Pickwick Lake when he was 57th.

The second longest string of top 50 finishes? It's 16 straight from 2008 to 2010 — also by VanDam! No one else comes close to his record for making cuts and earning checks. He makes the top 50 and gets a check nearly 95 percent of the time.

And what's the second longest active streak going into today? That belongs to Edwin Evers with nine straight.

Bobby Lane has a limit

9:08 am CDT, May 11, 2013

Bobby Lane just caught his fifth keeper of the day. It was one he'd like to cull later, but it was a keeper.

The way this water is changing, you don't take anything for granted. You might catch them better as the day goes on, or you might not.

Water is falling big time

9:05 am CDT, May 11, 2013

It was obvious at the Cooters Pond takeoff site that the water was dropping big time. But we just saw another example. Bobby Lane was crossing to the other side of the old bridge in Wetumpka when his prop hit a rock.

"There was five feet of water there yesterday," Lane said. "The trees I was fishing yesterday are four feet up on the bank today."

You can see the water line on this bridge pier and get an idea of the falling water as well.
