Murray makes a move

11:54 am CDT, May 11, 2013

John Murray decided to make a move, and we followed him into the Tallapoosa River. It's very shallow in here, about 15 feet in the main channel where we are, but much more shallow on the bank, probably less than 10 feet. When the water isn't as high as it is today, it's only two or three feet deep in here. Murray has a swim bait tied on now and is throwing it toward the bank. Looks like he had a bite, but whatever it was shook it off. He goes back to the jig. We're going to idle out of here now.

Looking for excitement

11:48 am CDT, May 11, 2013

Caught up to Edwin Evers on a quiet stretch of the Coosa.  The only exciting thing that's happened is Randy Howell zooming past. He's had enough and heads south.  We are taking his lead and looking for more excitement. Sounds like we missed it already.

Murray flipping a jig

11:46 am CDT, May 11, 2013

True to Ish's word, we jetted about two miles up the Coosa and found John Murray flipping a jig into some dense bushes along the bank. Murray is in sixth place and said he has about 11 pounds in the boat today.

"I've got a lot of little ones. I'd like a big one. That would be really good." He said he's caught them on jigs and crank baits today. Now, he's on a River2Sea Touchdown Jig and he's down to his last couple because he's lost many jigs this week in the roots. He's using 50-pound braid, as well.

Randy Howell, who has pretty much lived in the Bouldin Dam Canal this week, just motored past, heading toward the Gold Star Park where we launched earlier this morning.

The rain has held off so far, which is a blessing. My borrowed pair of rain pants were just returned to fellow Dotcom writer and good buddy Steve Wright.

Monroe has three

11:30 am CDT, May 11, 2013

We left Chris Lane and scooted a short distance into the Coosa River. We found Ish Monroe who said he has "three little babies. Missed a couple. The current is acting weird." Ish told us some other anglers are not far up. We're going.

Lane has two

11:19 am CDT, May 11, 2013

We found Chris Lane on the shoreline of the Alabama River and he said he's not doing well, holding up one finger to indicate today's catch. Seconds later, he put a 3 1/2 pounder in the boat. Looks like he's throwing a jig. Now he's got two fish in the live well.
