An uncommon situation has Day 1 leader Matt Herren frustrated on Bull Shoals Lake, according to photographer James Overstreet. Herren planned to sight-fish today, and he’s been on plenty of active spawning beds. But it seems that gizzard shad are harassing the bass.
“I’ve never seen anything like this before,” said Overstreet, who has been out of cell phone range all morning. “Matt has seen beds with six-pounders, four-pounders and multiple three-pounders. But the bass are so busy keeping the big shad fought off the beds that they aren’t paying any attention to Herren’s baits.”
Herren keeps threatening to give up on the sight-fish bite, then he’ll see another big bass on a spawning bed and can’t help himself, Overstreet said. Herren has about 10 or 11 pounds, so it’s not like he has bombed so far today.
