Combs makes a move

Keith Combs is one of the most consistent performers all week on Toledo Bend. That consistency is beginning to pay off, when it matters the most.

Like Kevin VanDam, he’s cranking transitional post-spawn areas–in his case creek channels–used by the bass to trace their way back to deeper water for the summer.

In local terms those channels are called “drains” because of the small size. Call it whatever you want, but that deeper water slices through underwater ridges. That contrast of deep and shallow water makes a perfect setup for post-spawn cranking.

The bass just added by Combs weighs about 5 pounds. He’s only got one other bass beneath that weight, giving him close to 26 pounds for the day. That could stand up as the second best catch of the tournament.

With the shad spawn ending those baitfish are moving off the shoreline and likley using the same migration route as the bass in returning to deep water.

That means this vital food source is populating the area fished by Combs, and certainly an influencer for him catching so many quality bass there.
