Chris Sumansky, of Renfrew, Pa., found 21 pounds, 5 ounces, worth of Lake Champlain bass to take the lead at the second stop of the 2009 Bassmaster Northern Open circuit. Sumansky took advantage of a week-long practice before the tournament to get re-acquainted with Champlain.
Dave Andrews of Bolton, Mass., started strong and finished stronger to take the lead at the 2009 Bassmaster Northern Open on Lake Champlain.
On Thursday he caught a limit in about three hours. Exercising traditional competitive angler thought, he left the area with his fish still biting, believing he could take more weight from it another day.
"This is incredible," Mansue said. "I've been fishing competitively for 10 years and it feels great to be able to say I'm a champion now."
To a man the anglers said they were clueless as they made final modifications to their tackle. Despite that, however, three anglers were able to rise to the top of the field.

Mansue was working a slow-moving, bottom bait — but would not say what — along hard bottom near Havre de Grace, Md. Mansue says the winds helped to slow the current through his area, making his technique more effective.
