As the year winds down, I’ve been thinking about some things. One of them is my name. I know that sounds crazy but it enters my mind from time to time, especially at this time of the year.
I have a tournament coming up on a lake with lots of grass. I wanted to practice but the lake is off-limits so I thought I’d go to Erie and fish some of the grassy bays.
When the wind or current is up and you’re spending more time trying to control your boat than you are fishing, consider using a drift sock.
Let’s talk about the tournament. Oneida was good to me. I missed the cut by 2 ounces. More importantly, after some self-analysis — much of it through this column — I’m making better decisions.

I’m still in New York. The fish are moving quickly into their fall patterns, and I’m thinking Oneida will be an interesting tournament.
I’m up on Lake Champlain in New York chasing smallmouth. It’s a great time of the year to do that.
I have to tell you that I got my nerve up and fished my beloved Tuesday Night Tournament last week. I didn’t get in too much trouble for doing that, either. And I won!
I’ve been thinking about things over the last few days and I have to tell you I’m kind of proud of myself.
